When choosing a home renovation contractor in the Twin Cities for a roofing, siding, or window and door project, look for these qualities:

• Valid, up-to-date licensing and insurance. Any reputable home exterior renovation contractor should have general liability and worker’s compensation insurance. They should also have a Minnesota state license and any local licensing required.

• A written contract with services and completion milestones clearly outlined. This contract should include a detailed list of all renovation work being completed, project timeline, warranties, and payment schedule. Never proceed with just a verbal agreement.

• A positive reputation in your community. When choosing a roofing and siding contractor in the Twin Cities, begin by checking online reviews and ratings in places like Google, Yelp, and Better Business Bureau. Look for mostly positive feedback; not many contractors will have a perfect rating, what matters is that there’s a consensus of good work and reliable service.

• An estimate detailing all expenses. The estimate should include a breakdown of materials like siding panels or roof shingles, cost of labor, cleanup costs, and any permitting expenses. Beware of quotes that seem too low, as these often come with expensive change orders later.

• Prompt and friendly communication in person and on the phone. Finding a home renovation contractor in the Twin Cities that always responds promptly, explains services clearly, and is forthcoming when asked a question. If you feel a contractor is being uncommunicative or evading answers, you might be better off with someone else.
